Family Home Evening...makes a comeback!

Ryan and I have recommitted to making some vital changes in our lives...not that we were doing anything 'wrong', but there was (and still is) room for improvement! One of our goals is to have Family Home Evening each week. This has been a 'challenge' because Ryan has usually had classes on Monday Evenings, and we 'forget' the rest of the week. Plus, most of you know just how 'hard' it can be to have a lesson, song, prayer, game, treat, etc, etc, etc with a one- and three-year old. Those are our excuses anyway. In reality, we've just been lazy.

We decided to kick it up a notch and have a SHORT lesson (like 45 seconds to a minute and a half) which is about all the boys can take.

Tonight we sang "I Hope They Call Me on a Mission", colored a picture of two missionaries (I quickly drew 'my brother and his companion'), each boy colored two, since we were making two packages, and we briefly talked about being an example. Tanner enjoyed putting all the candy in the box along with his pictures that he colored for Elder Crandall (my brother) and Elder Sok in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and Elder Crandall (my cousin) in Lafayette, Indiana. He helped me hold the box together while I taped it shut; I think it made his day! And Mine. Taylor got a kick out of pounding the tip of my brand-new crayons into his picture...so his picture is mostly slabs of colored wax...he did get a few scribbles down though!

{Here are my handsome sons. It is my prayer that someday, they will gain a testimony of missionary work, and want to serve the Lord where He would have them teach His children of His gospel.}
I think this was a VERY fun and successful Family Home Evening, even though we forgot to say a closing prayer. We didn't forget treats though..."Napoleon" ice cream...I can't pronounce or spell what it really is. I've always called it Napoleon. :)

What fun things have you done or do you do for your Family Home Evenings? I'd LOVE to hear some ideas! Simple or complex, I'm open for suggestions!

Your boys are so cute! Great idea for FHE. We struggle with knowing what to do with little kids as well. Right now, we are doing scripture stories. It keeps Mary entertained for a while. We also did one on the Word of Wisdom. We cut faces out of paper plates and made slits for the mouths. One was a happy face and one was sad. I made a bunch of paper "good things and bad things" to put in the mouths. The kids loved it.

We got the nursery mannual that we use for lessons. My stake president told me one time that your lesson should last about a minute per year - Kaylee is 2 so a 2 min lesson.

I have this "Family Home Evening Lessons for the entire Year of 2009" that my cousin forwarded me. It has a lesson, activities, coloring pages, and everything for each week for the entire year. It centers around the 2009 Primary Theme. Some lessons I have to "alter" the lesson...make it a little more basic...on a 4 and 2 year old level...but Scott and I have loved having it! Sometimes I don't even use the actual "lesson" but use the topics and make up my own lesson...but anyway, let me know if you would like me to send it to you!

We just put Alyssa & Halle in charge and we're good to go. Last night Alyssa wrote good things and bad things on slips of paper. If we picked a bad one we had to pretend to burn it in the fire place. If it was good we got to put it in a treasure box. Halle made a game board and a family playing piece. If we roll under 3, we had to move back a space b/c we did something bad. If it was 3 or over we got to move forward a space. It was hilarious to hear the things they "said" they did to move back or forward. And this was all made up by them, with zero help from me. Do I not have the cutest kids??!! (Sorry, a little mommy moment there.)

We have also let our boys have a say in Famiily Home Evening. We made a chart and we rotate a lesson, activity, prayer/songs, and the treat. Everyone is in charge of something and makes everyone feel involved. Anthony and I have to help when its one of the boys turn to give the lesson but we have a book of pictures that we put together that they tell the lessons from. We also encourage them to bear their testimonies which takes a little prompting for us. My advice would be to just stick to it!

We have made a committment to "keeping" FHE as consistent as we can. And you're right. Not having them go on too long is SO important. Even for teenagers. You are a smart mommy. Thanks for the inspiration.

What software do you use for your cute layouts? Please share, you talented girl, you! :-)
