Triathlon Training...

um....so I want to do a triathlon.  yes, I have something to prove.  and yes, this is the first I have seriously considered it.

Have you ever competed or participated in a tri?  I know a lot of my blogging friends run 5k's, half marathons, marathons, and crazy 24 hour races (that's you, Becky M.!!!)...and I hate running with a passion....but I'm loving biking and I used to be a fish.  No, really.  I used to spend 2-4 hours in the pool every day, and I really miss it.

I know it won't take too much time to condition in the water again...well, maybe a little bit of time...and I know I don't have the right kind of bike (I have a mountain bike, not a roadie)...and my gym shoes/running shoes are a good four years old...but they're still white, so I can still use them, right??

I've found some sites and articles and completely signed up for a Tri in Pocatello on the 23rd of July...but I didn't hit the 'complete' button for two reasons.  (i don't know 'how' to do a tri, and Ryan kinda laughed at me when I told him I'd be spending $40 on the registration fee...and then we added up all the other fees like a pool pass, new shoes, new tires, etc, etc, etc.)

Any suggestions???  Where do I start?  If I don't do it now, i'm afraid i'll never do it...

I just wished you lived closer. I would so pay you for swim lessons. Jesses been in lessons for 4 years and still can't swim. I am at the point of through the kid in and he will figure it out. Then you could have the money for the tri. Sorry long story short just frustrated with no good swim teachers around here.

Oh you are brave!! I'm just trying to muster enough energy to make myself go for a walk this morning.

Go for it! I know you could totally do it. You can do anything. Wish I had some info for you -- but do a search. I bet you can find some websites that send you in the right direction.

Do it! The registration fee is very normal for any kind of race. Just go for it. You have nothing to lose, you can only be better for trying. Ben is currently training for a triathalon, and I will be training for one as well once the marathon is over. It is new to us too, but google and friends have been great tools. Oh, and get new shoes. They will make a huge difference, I promise. Get cross training shoes.

I have no idea. I admire you for such a desire because I would never do that! :)

Running is really "in" right now, but I don't enjoy running and I'm so slow, lol. Awesome for you though, do it. But, you know since running is "in" you have to spend lots of money to make it happen, like you mentioned fees and shoes. How about you pin a big number to your shirt and run community park? lol

I'd run with you to practice! I'm trying to stay motivated to run but it's so hard by myself. The race is a good motivator but if I don't practice I'm going to die! Good luck!

I would love to do a Tri, someday. If I know anyone that can help you with pointers about training and completing one, I'll send them your way. Good luck.

There's a lot of people (like 40 years and older too) in my ward who do marathons and triathlons. Is there someone you can convince to sign up with you? That would probably be the easiest way to stay motivated. $40 seems very cheap compared to how much my friends dish out for theirs. Consider new sneakers and tires an investment in your health. If you have the right tools you'll WANT to use them more! And gosh, all women can use more "ME" time!

Deanna - you can do this!!! It is completely worth every penny. Call me anytime - I'm doing the RUSH in Rexburg in August. I did it 2 years ago, and I've been teaching a Triathlon class at Apple Athletic Club in the mornings. Deanna - it seriously changed me. I can't tell you how accomplishing that goal for the first time gave me life again. DO IT!!!!

a year and a half ago, I set a goal to do a 5K just to get me in shape (I hated running)...and you know what, I've still never done one, but I've lost 45 lbs, and I've done plenty of 5K's on my own runs. I just have a real hard time paying money to go and run (the registration fees)....if that makes sense. Anyway, I just used that as a motivator, but once I got the motivation and kept doing it, I realized that it really didn't matter to me (but for some it does) if I went out and "proved" I could do it, because I knew I could do it, and so maybe you could just set little goals for yourself, like swimming so far, or biking so far or so long, but not really doing a real tri...just one on your own! Whatever you do, good luck!!!

Ross always mocks me for doing races. He said when I was doing my 24 hour race, 'You know, our ancestors are probably in heaven, looking down, and thinking, she paid $80 to run through the dessert in the middle of the night?! After all we did!' lol. I have done several tris & let me tell you that a road bike is WAY, I am talking WAY WAY easier than a mountain bike. I stink at the swim and I think that is where most people struggle - so hey, you have an advantage there ;) I have been doing them for almost 6 years now and it has taken me this long to get all the gear since it is so expensive and there is so much. I got most of my stuff either on sell w/ coupons (my tri suit and my wet suit) or off ebay (bike shoes) or ksl (road bike). But I would suggest borrowing or make do unless you know this is something you want to stick with. But trust me, if you do it, you will want to. It is addicting! Good luck!
