And so it begins.

My favorite childhood game was "School".  Sometimes I played it by myself, other times with siblings.  Sometimes I even played it with friends and cousins.  But what I loved more than playing it, was setting it up.  Making a roll.  Setting out pencils and papers for assignments.  Digging through my mom's stamps to make "good job" stamps on "assignments".  Making up the names of my students or peers.  Telling imaginary "William" to sit in his seat, or praising "Jane" on her beautiful script.

*sigh*

So is it any wonder that I got a degree in teaching?  And have loved teaching high school?  And am now teaching Pre-Kindergarteners?

I've been looking forward to today for a long time.
Today is the first day that Tanner brought home homework.
*squeal!!!!!*

One back-to-front, a four page reader for the week, and another book for the week.

I just pray I can keep this enthusiasm up.  And that he doesn't take a hour to get two pages done every.single.day.

Any suggestions for helping him to FOCUS?  The boy is so easily distracted.  It's killing me!

If it is logistically possible, maybe break up the assignment so he only does a little at a time? That way he only needs to stay focused for a short amount. Then just gradually increase the working time when he is more used to it and seems to focus better. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

that is a great idea! The whole thing should have taken less than 10 minutes....so it cracks me up that it too him so long! LOL! We'll try that today. :)

Peter took a long time to do his homework when he first started but gradually got better. I can't remember what I did...I think that I just tried to be patient and get through it!

Hazel also took FOREVER to do her homework when she first started bringing it home. She is still easily distracted and it will probably be something that she is constantly struggling against through school - this focusing - but about the time that I was ready to go to her teacher and tell her, "Hey. Hazel's knows the stuff. Can we just reduce what she's doing every day? Because this is taking hours!" She magically started speeding up and doing better. And I was glad that I'd never talked to her teacher, but just let her work it out on her own. It is incredibly rewarding to see your children working to overcome some of the things that are difficult for them.

So my advice? Just be patient. If it takes an hour, that's how long it takes. A little at a time, he'll get quicker. He'll learn and be better for it. It's just frustrating being the parent. :)

The homework thing will come in time. I am sure you will find some great tricks that work. I have Mary do hers right when she gets home (after she has a snack). She is still in "school mode" at that time, so she does it easier.
I am sure you are an amazing teacher!

haha. Just let him be. I have a 15 year old brother that it takes hours to motivate to do a single page of reading etc. it's funny though. we get laughing and decide: at least he is trying and not everyone loves it. haha
